Our story

A family business, 15 years in the making

Spear Head Spade is made by one family, and every order is hand-packed in New Jersey. Here is how worn-out knees and hips, a stubborn garden, and two patents turned into the shovel gardeners reach for when a regular shovel gives up.

  • Over 600,000 sold
  • 15 years, one family
  • Double patented
  • Best Shovel/Spade, Better Homes & Gardens 2025

From a painful hobby to a better shovel

The Spear Head Spade began with inventor Daniel Mathieu of Windsor, Connecticut. When two artificial knees and two artificial hips made digging painful enough to end his favorite hobby, he designed a blade that slips into tough New England soil instead of fighting it. He and his son Julien, an engineer, secured two patents on the design.

Gardeners reach for it to:

  • Transplant deeply rooted perennials like ornamental grass, irises, and hostas
  • Dig in rocky, clay, dense, or compacted soil
  • Plant near trees and bushes without a pickaxe
  • Do fine, detailed digging that leaves the rest of the bed alone

Today Spear Head Spade is Glorious Outdoors LLC, a family business, and every order is hand-packed in New Jersey. In 2025, Better Homes and Gardens named the Spear Head Spade its best shovel and spade.
