The best gas powered leaf blower is the Husqvarna 125B. Its listing states 470 CFM, 170 MPH and 12.5 N of blow force from a 28cc 2-cycle engine, as much air as any handheld here, with cruise control and air purge starting, for about $220. If your lot runs past an acre, buy the 150BT backpack instead.

1. Husqvarna 125B 28cc handheld gas leaf blower: best overall
The Husqvarna 125B (model 952711925) is the handheld we would buy first. Its listing states a 2-cycle, 28cc, 1.1 HP engine delivering 470 CFM, 170 MPH and 12.5 N: tied for the most air of any handheld here, and with its vacuum sibling the 125BVx one of only two handhelds with a published blow force. The listing also names air purge starting, an auto return stop switch that resets to on so the next pull fires, and cruise control. At about $220 it is the best overall. Where it loses: it is a 2-cycle, so every tank is mixed fuel, there is no vacuum, and 12.5 N is a little over half the force of the 150BT backpack below.
2. Echo PB-2620 X Series 25.4cc handheld gas leaf blower: the pro line handheld
The Echo PB-2620 is the handheld every top-ranking roundup puts first. Its title states 172 MPH, 456 CFM and a 25.4cc 2-stroke engine in the X Series line. The rest we have to be straight about: this listing carries one feature bullet that says nothing about the machine, so weight, tank size and blow force are unstated, and we will not fill that gap. Stock read nine units on 2026-09-14. Where it loses: about $80 more than the 125B for 14 fewer listed CFM, no published blow force, and a stock count that may not outlast the leaves.
3. Troy-Bilt TB272V 27cc handheld gas leaf blower with vacuum kit: best value
The Troy-Bilt TB272V (model 41AR272V766) is the cheapest way onto this page, and not a stripped machine. The listing states a 27cc 2-cycle full-crank engine, 450 CFM and 150 MPH, SpringAssist pull starts, a variable speed throttle with cruise control, and a vacuum kit. That is 20 CFM behind our best overall pick for about $43 less, with a kit the 125B lacks. Where it loses: 150 MPH is the slowest air here, and speed is what unsticks a wet leaf from concrete, so a rainy November week will show it.
4. Husqvarna 125BVx 28cc gas blower vacuum and mulcher kit: best blower that also vacuums
The Husqvarna 125BVx (model 952711902) is the 125B with a vacuum kit bolted to it. The listing states the same 2-cycle, 28cc, 1.1 HP engine at 470 CFM, 170 MPH and 12.5 N, plus a vacuum kit whose mulching knives cut the leaves down so the bag holds more. One machine does both halves: blow the leaves into a line, switch tubes, suck the line into a bag as shreds. At about $270 it is the pick if you bag. 5. Husqvarna 150BT 51cc gas backpack leaf blower: best for an acre or more
The Husqvarna 150BT (model 970466901) has the most air, speed and force on this page. The listing states a 2-cycle, 51cc, 2.16 HP X-TORQUE engine at 765 CFM, 270 MPH and 22 N, which is 295 CFM more air and 76 percent more force than our best handheld, on a padded harness with a hip belt. Air purge, a variable speed throttle and cruise control are all listed. At about $253 it costs $33 more than the 125B. Where it loses: the weight sits on your back rather than one arm, it is more blower than a quarter-acre lot needs, and you strap it on for every small job.
6. SENIX BL4C-M 49cc 4-cycle gas backpack leaf blower: best 4-cycle
The SENIX BL4C-M is the only 4-cycle from a brand with a service network that we found in stock in the band. The listing states a 49cc 4-cycle engine at 425 CFM and 195 MPH, a variable speed throttle with cruise control, lower emissions than a 2-cycle, and a yard size the maker names outright: half an acre to one acre. That yard figure is useful, because it is the only listing here that says what the machine is sized for. At about $219 it is the pick if you want a 4-cycle. Where it loses: 340 CFM less air than the 150BT for $34 less money, no published blow force, and an oil sump that needs changes.
What about Stihl, Echo backpacks and Craftsman?
Five brands readers ask for did not earn a slot, and the reason is stock, price or missing data rather than quality. We checked Stihl, the Echo and Husqvarna backpacks, Craftsman, VEVOR and the cheaper Echo handheld on 2026-09-14, and here is what each cost and the stock count where it was scarce.
- Stihl. Stihl sells through its dealers, not Amazon. The one BG 50 listing we found was a third-party seller at about $210, one unit left, with a feature list reading "Complete Unit".
- Echo backpacks. The PB-580T sells at about $439 and the PB-9010T at about $699, both over our $400 ceiling. A second PB-580T listing sat at about $384 with four units left and no model name.
- The bigger Husqvarna backpacks. The 350BT at about $430 and the 580BTS at about $649 are both above the band. The 150BT is the same family inside it.
- Craftsman. The B2000 was in stock at about $209 and lists 25cc, 430 CFM and 180 MPH. It lists less air than our value pick, 430 CFM against 450, for about $32 more, and $11 short of the 125B.
- VEVOR. The 75.6CC 4-stroke backpack was in stock at about $202 and lists 615 CFM and 179 MPH, a real 4-cycle alternative inside the band. It is the no-name end of the category, with no dealer network if the engine needs work.
- Echo PB-2520. In stock at about $199, but the listing carries no feature bullets and the title gives only 25.4cc, so we could not state one air figure.
Should you buy a gas leaf blower or a battery one?
Buy gas when the job is long, wet and far from an outlet, because a gas blower refuels in seconds and holds full power to the last drop. Buy battery for a quarter acre or less, for early mornings near neighbors, and when you already own the battery platform. Our best cordless leaf blower guide covers that side.
Two honest points for the gas side. A battery blower gives its rated air until the pack dies, so the real comparison is a blower plus a second battery. And gas is louder, dirtier, and runs on fuel that goes stale.
Is a 2-stroke or a 4-stroke gas leaf blower better?
A 2-stroke fires on every turn of the crank, so it is lighter and cheaper for the same power, but the oil rides in the fuel and every tank has to be mixed. A 4-stroke keeps oil in its own sump and runs straight gasoline, so it is heavier and quieter with fewer emissions.

Does CFM or MPH matter more on a gas leaf blower?
CFM matters more for most fall cleanup, because volume is what pushes a wide row of dry leaves across a lawn. MPH matters when leaves are wet, matted or stuck to concrete, because speed is what breaks them loose. Neither number alone tells you much, which is why blow force exists.
Blow force in newtons combines both, and it is the one figure that compares two machines honestly. Only Husqvarna publishes it here: 12.5 N on the 125B and 125BVx, 22 N on the 150BT. Echo, Troy-Bilt and SENIX state none, so their rows read "Not listed".
Should you buy a handheld or a backpack gas blower?
Buy a handheld under half an acre, when the blower comes out for fifteen minutes at a time, and when you want to hang it on a garage hook one-handed. Buy a backpack over half an acre, or when a session runs an hour, because the weight moves off your wrist and onto a hip belt.

Can you still buy a gas leaf blower where you live?
In most of the country, yes. California has banned the sale of new small off-road gas engines since January 2024, so new gas blowers are largely off the shelves there, though running the one you own is a separate question. More than 100 US cities and counties restrict use, and Washington DC banned it in 2022.
The rules split three ways. Some ban the sale but not the use. Others phase use out over years: Lower Merion Township, the first in Pennsylvania to do it, bars gas blowers from June 1 to October 1 this year and year-round from January 2029. A few states, Texas and Georgia among them, bar their own towns from banning by fuel type. Check your ordinance page first.
What keeps a gas leaf blower starting?
Fresh fuel does. Pump gasoline with ethanol draws water and goes stale in about a month, and stale fuel in a small carburetor is the most common reason a blower that worked in November will not start in April. Mix what you will use, stabilize the rest.
Three owner notes we would give a neighbor buying their first one.
- Mix by the label, not by memory. Every 2-cycle here wants a specific ratio, and the wrong one seizes the engine or fouls the plug.
- Use ethanol-free fuel or a stabilizer. Either buys months instead of weeks, and canned pre-mixed fuel costs less than a carburetor rebuild.
- Run it dry before winter, and clean the air filter every few tanks. Blowers live inside the dust cloud they make, and a clogged filter feels like a tired engine.
When should you buy a gas leaf blower?
Buy in September. The good machines thin out as soon as the first oaks let go in October, and the listings still in stock in November are the ones nobody wanted. Buying early also buys a dry afternoon to mix fuel and read the manual.
What happens to the leaves once they are in a pile?
