The best kids gardening sets, by job
1. Storybook Kids Explorers Club Kids Gardening Set: best overall
Best overall
Best for: A watering can, gloves and a bag in one box
Storybook Kids Explorers Club Kids Gardening Set
- Tools: Shovel and rake
- Heads: Metal edges
- Extras: Watering can, gloves, tote, stakes, book
A watering can, a shovel, a rake, plant stakes, kids' gardening gloves, a tote bag and a guide book, which Baby Bargains named its best gift set after trying sets with real kids.
The Storybook Kids Explorers Club kit puts a first garden in one bag. By its listing it holds a watering can, a shovel, a rake, plant stakes, kids' gardening gloves, a tote bag and a gardening guide book, 11 pieces in all, and it calls the tools scaled-down real garden tools with metal edges. The listing describes an easy-tilt watering can and a kid-sized bag with wide handles and deep pockets.
Why it is the pick: it is the one pick here with a watering can, plant stakes and a guide book in the box, so a child can dig, rake, plant, mark the row and water from one bag, and it has a hands-on test behind it. Baby Bargains, whose Denise and Alan Fields tried several gardening sets with real kids, named it their best gift set. They liked the included how-to gardening book, the canvas tote with side pockets and the good quality, and found the tools sized well for little hands.
Good to know: Baby Bargains' one complaint was that the metal heads can be bent if the ground is too hard. Its listing calls it a toddler gardening kit and gives no age range in years. Baby Bargains last updated its article in June 2023, and the contents above are the listing's, as we read it.
Where it loses: its listing names no hoe and gives no tool lengths. For raking leaves and digging standing up, the long-handled tools of pick 2 (or pick 4) are the ones whose listings give a length.
2. JustForKids 4-Piece Long-Handled Garden Tool Set: best long-handled set
Best long-handled set
Best for: Raking and digging standing up
JustForKids 4-Piece Long-Handled Garden Tool Set
- Tools: Shovel, rake, hoe, leaf rake
- Heads: Steel; handles of wood
- Extras: None; handles hang on hooks
A shovel, a rake, a hoe and a leaf rake with steel heads on handles of solid wood, up to 27.5 inches by its listing, which Baby Bargains named its best long-handle set.
G & F Products' JustForKids long-handled set is four tools, a shovel, a rake, a hoe and a leaf rake, with steel heads on handles of solid wood, by its listing, which gives each tool as up to 27.5 inches tall. Baby Bargains gives the four as 24.5 to 29.5 inches long, in four colors: a green rake, a yellow leaf rake, a purple shovel and a red hoe. The listing says the join between the metal head and the wooden stick uses what it calls enhanced binding, so the two pieces will not fall apart.
Why it is the pick: it gives a child four long-handled tools to rake leaves, hoe and dig standing up, and it has a hands-on test behind it. Baby Bargains named it their best long-handle set, the next step once a child is hooked on gardening, called it great quality ("Yes, these are real rakes, shovels!") and liked the holes in the handles for hanging the tools up.
Good to know: its listing grades it two ways: "5yr+" in the title, and "Adult Supervision recommended, Age 7 and Up" in its feature list. There is no bag; the holes in the handles are the storage.
Where it loses: no watering can, gloves or bag, and no hand tools for pots and beds; pick 1 or pick 3 covers those.
3. JustForKids Garden Tool Set with Tote: best hand tool set
Best hand tool set
Best for: A few hand tools for beds and pots
JustForKids Garden Tool Set with Tote
- Tools: Trowel, shovel, hand rake
- Heads: Metal
- Extras: Canvas tote
A trowel, a shovel and a hand rake with metal heads in a canvas tote, which Baby Bargains recommends as a starting set for first-time gardeners.
The JustForKids hand tool set, also from G & F Products (model 10012), is three short tools, a trowel, a shovel and a hand rake, in a canvas tote, by its listing. The listing describes metal heads made for light gardening jobs and tools sized for small hands, and a tote with compartments to keep the tools in order.
Why it is the pick: it keeps to the basics, three hand tools and a bag for beds, pots and a pile of dirt, and it has a hands-on test behind it. Baby Bargains recommends it as a first set: they called it "a nice place to start for first-time gardeners," liked the overall quality and the tote, and found it sized nicely for little hands.
Good to know: Baby Bargains' complaint is the tote, which holds the tools and little else. The set's listing title says "Ages 5 and Up".
Where it loses: no watering can or gloves, and no long-handled tools; for those, pick 1 or pick 2. For a full-size trowel for the grown-up beside them, see our garden trowel guide.
4. Duckura Kids Gardening Tools Set with Wheelbarrow: best set with a wheelbarrow
Best set with a wheelbarrow
Best for: A wheelbarrow in the set
Duckura Kids Gardening Tools Set with Wheelbarrow
- Tools: 7 tools incl. hoe, leaf rake, trowel
- Heads: Iron, pine handles
- Extras: Wheelbarrow, gloves, spray bottle
A wheelbarrow with seven tools (two shovels, two rakes, a hoe, a leaf rake and a trowel), gloves and a spray bottle, pine handles and iron heads, on Duckura's listing alone.
Duckura's set adds a wheelbarrow to seven tools, by its listing: a shovel, a rake, a hoe and a leaf rake, then a second shovel, a second rake and a trowel, with kids' gloves and a spray bottle. The handles are pine and the tool heads iron. Duckura gives the length of its shovel set as 70 cm (27.5 inches), and each handle has holes for hanging and comes apart at a middle connector for storage; Duckura's note says the connector needs to be turned to the bottom, with no gap, before use.
Why it is the pick: it is the one pick with a wheelbarrow, and with seven tools it has the most tools of the four picks, so a child can dig, rake, hoe and haul from one set. No tester we read has used it, so it is here on Duckura's listing alone; the listing calls the tools "sturdy enough for actual digging."
Good to know: its listing title says "Ages 3+", and its feature list names "age 2 3 4+ years old". The listing does not say what the wheelbarrow is made of.
Where it loses: no watering can, and no tester behind it. For a tested kit, pick 1; for tested long-handled tools, pick 2.
How we chose these
We compared the kids gardening sets in Amazon's catalog by what their listings say: which tools come in the box, what the heads and handles are made of, the tool lengths where given, what else comes with them and the age grading. Then we read the testers who put kids' tools to work: Baby Bargains' best kids gardening tools, whose authors "took actual kids and several different sets of gardening tools to see which worked best in the real world" (last updated June 2023), and Yummy Toddler Food's best kids garden tools, where Amy Palanjian writes up the tools her kids have used over multiple seasons in the family garden. Three of the four picks are sets Baby Bargains tried. The fourth set Baby Bargains recommends, a three-piece hand tool set, was not in stock on Amazon when we checked, and Corona's kids garden tool set did not meet our floor when we checked, so neither is linked here. No tester we read has used pick 4, and we say so in it.
Our floor, for the picks and for the notes under Also considered: in stock on Amazon and sold new by Amazon or the seller named on the listing, when we checked on November 7, 2026. Each pick met it. Contents, materials, lengths and age grading come from each listing, named where they appear; the tester findings are Baby Bargains' and Yummy Toddler Food's, and the care points come from Baby Bargains and Michigan State University Extension.
Also considered: kids gardening sets that missed the list
Kinderific Gardening Set. A canvas tote, a 22-ounce watering can, gardening gloves, a rake, a shovel and a fork, each tool with a metal head on a handle of wood, by its listing (its title adds a trowel). It met our floor and does much the same job as pick 1, but no tester we read has used it, while Baby Bargains tried pick 1.
JustForKids detachable long-handled set. The same maker's shovel, rake, hoe and leaf rake at 27.5 inches, with handles that come apart in two pieces and a travel bag; its listing says "Ages 5+". It met our floor, but Baby Bargains tried the one-piece set, so pick 2 is the one with a test behind it.
Hey! Play! Kids Gardening Tools Set. A shovel and a leaf rake at 28 inches and a rake and a hoe at 27 inches, with metal heads on handles of wood; its listing recommends it for children 8 and up. It met our floor and does pick 2's job, but Baby Bargains tried pick 2.
Qtioucp Kids Gardening Set with Wheelbarrow. A 14-piece set with a wheelbarrow, four long-handled tools, three hand tools, gloves, a handbook and stickers, with metal heads on handles of wood, for ages 3 to 8 by its listing. It met our floor, but its listing does not name the seven tools or give their lengths, where pick 4's names every tool and gives a length.
John Deere Deluxe 34-Inch Wheelbarrow and Garden Set. A large metal wheelbarrow with handles of wood, five gardening tools, an apron and gloves, for ages 5 and up by its listing. It met our floor, but the listing does not name the five tools or say what they are made of.
Melissa & Doug Sunny Patch gardening tote set. A patterned tote with a shovel, a rake and a spray bottle, all three in plastic, for ages 3 to 6 by its listing. It met our floor, but its tools are plastic, where every pick here lists metal heads or edges.
The kids gardening sets side by side: tools, heads and handles, length
The listings describe their sets in different terms, so here is what each one gives, side by side, with the source noted where it is a tester's.
| Pick | Tools in the box | Heads and handles | Tool length as stated | Also in the box |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Storybook Kids Explorers Club Kids Gardening Set | Shovel, rake | Metal edges; handle material not given | Not given | Watering can, plant stakes, gloves, tote bag, guide book (11 pieces in all) |
| 2. JustForKids 4-Piece Long-Handled Garden Tool Set | Shovel, rake, hoe, leaf rake | Steel heads; handles of solid wood | Up to 27.5 in (listing); 24.5 to 29.5 in (Baby Bargains) | Nothing; holes in the handles for hanging (Baby Bargains) |
| 3. JustForKids Garden Tool Set with Tote | Trowel, shovel, hand rake | Metal heads; handle material not given | Hand rake 6 in, shovel 8 in, trowel 8.5 in | Canvas tote with compartments |
| 4. Duckura Kids Gardening Tools Set with Wheelbarrow | Shovel, rake, hoe, leaf rake; second shovel and rake; trowel | Iron heads, pine handles | Shovel set 70 cm (27.5 in) | Wheelbarrow, gloves, spray bottle |
What it shows: all four list metal heads or edges (pick 4's heads are iron, pick 2's steel). Picks 2 and 4 each give a length of 27.5 inches on their listings, pick 3's gives 6 to 8.5 inches for its three hand tools, and pick 1's gives none. Of the four picks, pick 1 is the only one with a watering can, and pick 4 the only one with a wheelbarrow.
What each set lets a child do
A kids gardening set is only as useful as the jobs it covers, so this table checks each pick against six of them, from its listing. The count in the last column is our arithmetic.
| Pick | Dig | Rake | Hoe | Water | Carry | Gloves | Jobs covered, of 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Storybook Kids Explorers Club Kids Gardening Set | Yes (shovel) | Yes (rake) | No | Yes (watering can) | Yes (tote bag) | Yes | 5 |
| 2. JustForKids 4-Piece Long-Handled Garden Tool Set | Yes (shovel) | Yes (rake, leaf rake) | Yes | No | No | No | 3 |
| 3. JustForKids Garden Tool Set with Tote | Yes (trowel, shovel) | Yes (hand rake) | No | No | Yes (canvas tote) | No | 3 |
| 4. Duckura Kids Gardening Tools Set with Wheelbarrow | Yes (two shovels, trowel) | Yes (two rakes, leaf rake) | Yes | No (a spray bottle only) | Yes (wheelbarrow) | Yes | 5 |
What it shows: picks 1 and 4 each cover five of the six jobs; pick 1 has no hoe, and pick 4 has a spray bottle rather than a watering can. Picks 2 and 3 cover three each, and together they still leave out watering and gloves. If you want to add one thing to a tools-only set, a child-sized watering can or a pair of kids' gloves fills the biggest gap.
Age grading, from the listings
We go by the age grading on each set's listing and nothing else, so here it is word for word, with where on the listing it appears. Some listings give two figures and one gives no age in years, so read the listing for the set you order.
| Pick | What the listing says | Where on the listing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Storybook Kids Explorers Club Kids Gardening Set | "Toddler Gardening Kit"; no age in years | Title |
| 2. JustForKids 4-Piece Long-Handled Garden Tool Set | "5yr+"; "Adult Supervision recommended, Age 7 and Up" | Title; feature list |
| 3. JustForKids Garden Tool Set with Tote | "Ages 5 and Up" | Title |
| 4. Duckura Kids Gardening Tools Set with Wheelbarrow | "Ages 3+"; "age 2 3 4+ years old" | Title; feature list |
What it shows: no two listings word it the same way, from a toddler label with no years to two figures on one listing. Picks 2 and 4 each give two figures in different places on the same listing, and pick 3's gives one, in its title.
Long handles or hand tools
Long-handled kids tools let a child rake leaves, hoe a row and dig while standing up, the way the grown-ups do; picks 2 and 4 give 27.5 inches on their listings. Hand tools, such as pick 3's trowel, shovel and hand rake, are for kneeling at a bed, filling a pot or digging in a pile of dirt. Pick 4 has a trowel alongside its shovel, rake, hoe and leaf rake.
Amy Palanjian of Yummy Toddler Food keeps her kids' long-handled tools in the garage with the family's "real" tools and writes that her kids are pleased their tools match the grown-ups'. For a simple start, she made a pile of dirt for her kids to dig and rake in with a small hand tool set. Her reason for skipping flimsy sets is in her own words: "it's really frustrating for little kids who want to help to have tools that are more toys than tools." Every pick here lists metal heads or edges; the Melissa & Doug set under Also considered lists plastic tools.
Getting started: watering and gloves
- Watering: Yummy Toddler Food writes that it has "found it very helpful to have watering cans sized just for the kids," and watering plants is the job Amy Palanjian calls a forever favorite. Pick 1 is the one pick with a can in the box; for the full-size cans the grown-ups use, our watering can guide sorts them by plant.
- Gloves: in Yummy Toddler Food's experience, coated kids gloves keep water out better than plain canvas ones and hold up for longer than a single season. Picks 1 and 4 come with gloves.
Care and storage
Kids tools need the same care as adult ones. Baby Bargains says to store them inside the house or the garage, because tools left out in the weather rust, and handles made of wood can split, the same as adult tools. Michigan State University Extension says to check tools before use for splintered handles, dulled heads, worn teeth or broken joints, to take a damaged tool out of use until it is repaired, and to clean tools and put them away in their place after use.
Each pick has its own storage: picks 1 and 3 come with a bag, pick 2's handles have holes for hanging on hooks (Baby Bargains), and pick 4's handles have holes for hanging and come apart at a middle connector, by its listing. Our guide to garden tool storage ideas has ways to hang long and short tools, and how to clean and store garden tools covers the end-of-season clean.
