A raised bed is mostly a decision about dimensions. Get the width, height and path spacing right and the bed works for a decade. Get them wrong and you will spend ten years reaching too far, kneeling in mud, or watching soil slump six inches below the frame every spring.

When a raised bed is the right answer
Raised beds earn their keep in three situations: your native soil is poor, compacted or contaminated; drainage is bad and plants sit wet; or bending to ground level is the thing keeping you out of the garden. In all three the bed solves a real problem.
They are less compelling if you have decent loam and a working back. A bed still gives you tidy edges and a defined space, but you are paying for material and fill to grow what would grow anyway. Ground-level beds with a cut edge cost nothing and hold moisture better in dry climates, since a raised bed drains faster on all sides.
Be honest about which case you are in before you spend the money.
The dimensions that matter
Width: four feet, maximum
This is the number people get wrong most often. A bed should never be wider than twice your comfortable reach, because the entire point is not stepping on the soil. Four feet works for most adults reaching from both sides. If the bed sits against a wall or fence and you can only reach it from one side, cap it at two and a half or three feet.
Wider looks more generous on paper and becomes a bed with an unreachable middle that quietly turns into a weed reservoir.
Height: match it to what is underneath
Six inches is the practical minimum over decent soil, because roots can continue down into the native ground. Over compacted subsoil, gravel or anything you do not want roots in, go twelve to eighteen inches so the bed carries the whole root zone itself.
If the reason for the bed is your knees or back, build to twenty four or thirty inches. At that height you can work seated on the edge, which changes the experience completely. It also multiplies the fill volume, so price the soil before committing to the height.
Length: whatever you like, with one caveat
Length is free. The caveat is bowing: soil pushes outward with real force when wet, and anything past about eight feet will belly out at the middle unless you brace it. A cross tie or an external stake driven at the midpoint of each long side solves it. Retrofitting a brace onto a bed that has already bowed is much harder than putting one in on day one.
Paths: wider than you think
Eighteen inches is walkable. Twenty four is comfortable. If you want to get a wheelbarrow between beds, you need thirty to thirty six inches, and you will want that the first time you move compost. Paths are the thing people shave to fit one more bed and regret every season after.

Building it
1. Pick the spot properly
Most vegetables want six to eight hours of direct sun. Watch the space across a day before you build, not from memory, and remember that summer sun sits higher than the spring sun you are probably standing in when planning.
Check water access too. A bed that needs a hose dragged around the house gets watered less often, and raised beds dry out faster than ground level soil.
2. Clear and level the ground
Strip the sod where the bed will sit. Cutting the outline first with a spade and lifting the turf in sections is faster than trying to skim it in one piece, and it gives you sod to compost elsewhere. A digging spade handles both the outline cut and the lifting, which is most of the site prep on a raised bed.
Then level it. This is the step everyone skips and it matters more than it looks: a frame set on a slope holds soil deeper at one end, drains unevenly, and looks visibly wrong once it is full. Check across both diagonals, not just along the sides.
3. Assemble the frame square
Build the frame in place if it is large, since a filled bed is not moving and a big empty frame is awkward to carry. Fasten corners with structural screws rather than nails, which work loose as timber moves through wet and dry cycles.
Check square by measuring both diagonals: equal diagonals mean square corners. Do it before the final fasteners go in, because a frame that is out of square will telegraph through every row you plant.
4. Deal with what is under the bed
Over grass, lay plain cardboard across the base and wet it. It smothers the turf and rots away within a season once roots are past it. Do not use plastic sheeting: it stops drainage, which defeats one of the main reasons to build the bed.
If you have gophers or voles, staple hardware cloth across the bottom of the frame before filling. Retrofitting that is a full excavation, so decide now.
5. Fill it, and do not fill it all with compost
This is the expensive mistake. Pure compost sounds like the luxury option and is actually a poor growing medium: it is too rich for many crops, holds water inconsistently, and decomposes further so the level slumps dramatically in the first year.
A reasonable mix is roughly sixty percent topsoil, thirty percent compost and ten percent something for structure such as coarse bark or perlite. For deep beds, fill the bottom third with coarse organic material like small logs, branches and leaves, then put the good mix above it. That cuts the volume of purchased soil substantially, and the buried material breaks down into the bed over the following years.
Expect to top up every spring regardless. Organic matter decomposes, and a settled bed is normal rather than a sign anything went wrong.
