About this plant
Despite the name, the ponytail palm is not a true palm. Its trunk swells into a round base that stores water, and from the top springs a fountain of long, thin leaves that curl and spill over like a ponytail.
It loves bright light and can take some direct sun. Because it stores water in its trunk, it prefers to dry out between waterings; water deeply, then wait until the soil is dry. In winter, water even less. Overwatering is the main mistake to avoid.
It grows slowly, so a small one stays desk sized for a long time, and the larger pots make a sculptural floor plant. A quirky, easy gift for a sunny spot.
The ASPCA lists the ponytail palm (Beaucarnea recurvata) as non-toxic to cats and dogs.
From November to April, we recommend adding Winter Plant Shipping Protection (a heat pack) at checkout. Plants shipped in cold weather without it are not covered for cold damage.
