About this plant

The pickle plant grows upright, segmented stems in grey-green with darker markings and soft spines, so it looks like a skinny cactus or a row of pickles standing on end. Given good light, it can flower too.

Bright light suits it best, including some direct sun. Water only when the soil is completely dry, then let the pot drain fully; soggy soil is the main thing that troubles it. Water sparingly in winter.

Choose a 3 or 4 inch pot. It stays narrow and compact, so it fits on a sunny sill or in a dish garden with other succulents, and it asks for very little attention.

The ASPCA lists Senecio species as toxic to cats and dogs, so keep it out of reach of cats and dogs.

From November to April, we recommend adding Winter Plant Shipping Protection (a heat pack) at checkout. Plants shipped in cold weather without it are not covered for cold damage.
