About this plant

The staghorn fern grows silvery green fronds that fork like a deer's antlers, plus flat, round shield fronds at the base that cling to whatever it grows on. In nature it grows on tree trunks, not in soil.

Give it bright, indirect light. Water when the growing medium is nearly dry, then soak it well; it prefers a cycle of wet and almost dry over constant moisture. Misting helps in dry rooms. The shield fronds turn brown as they age; that is normal, so leave them in place.

It arrives in a pot, and once it grows larger you can mount it on a wooden board to hang on the wall like living art. A conversation piece and a memorable gift.

The ASPCA lists the staghorn fern (Platycerium bifurcatum) as non-toxic to cats and dogs.

From November to April, we recommend adding Winter Plant Shipping Protection (a heat pack) at checkout. Plants shipped in cold weather without it are not covered for cold damage.
