About this plant

Calathea 'Beauty Star' grows long, narrow leaves in deep green, each one etched with fine pinstripes that shift from pink to silver as the leaf matures. Turn a leaf over and the underside is a rich purple, so the plant looks good from every angle.

Keep it in medium, indirect light, out of direct sun, which fades the stripes and crisps the edges. Water when the top inch of soil starts to dry so it stays evenly moist but never soggy. It appreciates humidity: a pebble tray or a spot near other plants helps keep the leaf tips green.

Choose a 4 or 6 inch pot, in a nursery pot, an eco pot or a cow pot. It suits a bright bedroom, an office or a bathroom with a window, and it makes a striking gift.
