About this plant
String of pearls grows long strands of round, pea-like leaves that spill over the edge of the pot like green beaded necklaces. In a hanging pot or on a high shelf, the strands can trail a foot or more.
Bright light with a little gentle direct sun keeps the pearls plump and the strands full. Water when the soil is dry, soaking it thoroughly and letting it drain; shriveled pearls mean it is thirsty, while mushy ones mean too much water. A shallow pot and gritty cactus mix help.
Keep the crown of the plant in good light and avoid burying the stems. Snipped strands laid on damp soil root readily, so it is easy to fill out the pot or start a new one.
The ASPCA lists Senecio species as toxic to cats and dogs, so keep it out of reach of cats and dogs.
From November to April, we recommend adding Winter Plant Shipping Protection (a heat pack) at checkout. Plants shipped in cold weather without it are not covered for cold damage.
