About this plant
Autumn fern, also called Japanese shield fern, earns its name from its new growth. Fresh fronds unfurl in shades of copper, red and bronze, then turn green as they mature, so the plant often shows warm and cool tones at once. It grows in a graceful, arching clump shaped like a vase.
It is comfortable in shade, so low to medium, indirect light suits it well. Keep the soil evenly moist and never let it dry out completely. Trim any tired fronds at the base to make room for new ones.
It comes in a 4 or 6 inch pot. Gardeners will recognize it as a classic of the shade garden; indoors it brings the same easygoing texture to a dim corner.
From November to April, we recommend adding Winter Plant Shipping Protection (a heat pack) at checkout. Plants shipped in cold weather without it are not covered for cold damage.
